Bassist, composer and Montana native, Chad earned his Bachelor of Music degree from Montana State University. During his time there, he performed regularly
in most of its ensembles, including the MSU Jazz Lab I, MSU Chamber Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble and the
Bozeman Symphony.
From 1998-1999 he functioned as bassist for the folk rock ensemble Sixth Sense, a touring group formed by the well-known northwest songwriter
Chris Cunningham,
also co-founding the jazz combo Deepswing, a fixture in Montana venues for almost three years.
After completing a period of composition study with
Eric Funk, he relocated to Portland, Oregon to continue his studies with renowned Czech-American composer
Tomas Svoboda. In January 2002, Langford had his professional debut with conductor Huw Edwards leading the Rose City Chamber Orchestra in selections from his
Divertimento for String Orchestra.
His catalog currently contains over 20 chamber works for varying instrumentations including string quartet, piano quintet, brass quartet, and string orchestra. He has also composed music for several short films, and was the subject of the documentary film
Moment, an exploration of improvisation in music and dance, which aired on Montana PBS in 1999-2000.
Chad's interest in the applications of software technology in music composition and performance has formed the basis for much of his current work.
Place, his first commissioned work to utilize computer resources, was composed for The Dance Cartel, a Portland-based dance company, in collaboration with choreographer Paige McKinney.
He recently created
Open... in collaboration with the pianist and composer Laurel Yost, a unique sound installation at Montana State University. Featuring interactive sculptures by Debra Ramsdell and a percussion installation designed by Jeff Vick, the music for the project was constructed and manipulated by computer to form rich, shifting textures of everyday sonic experiences, as well as exploring the intersections between public and private spaces and the typical performer/audience relationship.
His short piece
Envoi has recently been included as part of the
ZEPPELIN 2004 Festival's sound installation "On Agreement and Conflict" in Barcelona and Zaragoza, Spain.
In addition to the Jeni Fleming Acoustic Trio, Chad also performs and records with
Springhill, a folk/jazz quartet featuring the renowned Northwest performers Craig Hall, Ann Tappan, and Brad Edwards.
